There are many commonalities between children with cancer and other populations that experience early-life stress. Thus, it is important to review the existing research surrounding the stress response in the pediatric cancer population. In this review, we describe the psychoneuroimmunology behind stress regulation and the differences observed in stress regulatory pathways in childhood cancer patients. Our objective is to provide a clinically relevant summary of the stress pathways contributing to, and exacerbating, childhood illness and outline some potential
interventions.
